Our Mission
We work with the Samburu Maasai people in the semi-arid region of Northern Kenya, in the township of Maralal. Led by local people, we take a holistic approach focusing on four key areas, to tackle poverty and the effects of a serious water shortage crisis. By creating projects that enable harvesting the rain, resourcing underground water stores, improving the quality of live, enhancing opportunities for income generation, and restoring and protecting land for now and into the future.
Our project makes sure fresh clean water is abundantly and easily available to the most marginalized and disadvantaged so they can enjoy a quality life, generate incomes through growing crops and livestock – in 2025 while further protecting their environment for tomorrow.
Where we work
Water is Life Kenya-NZ’s first project is in the dry-arid, drought ridden town of Maralal, Samburu in Northern Kenya, Africa, where people’s lives are affected daily by a drastic lack of fresh clean water. Most harshly effected are the women and children. With an average rainfall of 319mm per year (there can be no rain for 3 years!). Drought is common for 10 months of the year in this Dry Arid region of Kenya, creating a severe water shortage crisis every year for most of the year.
This is why we are working with The Samburu Maasai community in Yare, Maralal, Kenya to tackle this crisis today and influence change for tomorrow.

The Water Crisis in Maralal
In the dry lands of Northern Kenya, the rains are scarce—and so is water. Women and girls walk up to 2 hours every day to collect just 20 litres. That’s all they have to drink, cook, wash, and live on. It’s exhausting. It’s unfair. And together, we can change it.
Why It Matters
Water doesn’t just quench thirst. It restores health. Frees up time. Opens the door to education. Sparks gardens. Restores Forests, Grows dreams. Reduces risk. When water flows, so does opportunity—and hope.
